Dare to Do Hard Things

As I faced the seemingly impossible ascent to the peak of Triglav, Slovenia’s highest mountain, fear gripped me. “I can do this. I can do this,” I repeated, starting our climb.

The steep incline, rising 1500 meters, tested my growing unease. My body longed for the comfort of Lake Bohinj’s clear, blue waters glistening below.

Hiking had always meant fear to me, but this time, I saw it also required immense effort. I realized how often I associated leaving my comfort zone with fear—fear of the unknown. But it also requires determination, an aspect less familiar but equally crucial.

When we stand before the mountain we want to climb, our fears and doubts often surface, compelling us to delve deeper within ourselves to find a way forward.

Understanding our ‘why’ becomes vital. Why push past fear and comfort? Why summon the determination to keep going? As the path grew steeper and more challenging, I pondered these questions.

The mountain became my mirror, reflecting my fears, vulnerabilities, strengths, and character. It reminded me:

Trust yourself.

Take one step at a time.

Learn from each environment.

Each section of the path offers unique challenges and lessons.

There is always a way forward.

After 8 hours, we made it to the top.

An astounding sunrise greeted us, the sky illuminated with vibrant pinks and oranges; the expanse was breathtaking.

My heart became alive with gratitude.

Each of us faces our unique challenges and journeys. Often, our focus on the fear of the unknown overshadows our innate ability to pursue our true desires with determination.

By tapping into the resilience that lies within us, we can choose to move forward and follow what we truly want. The answers and strength we seek are within. We need the courage to find them, to see them, and to believe in them.

Although the path may be difficult, we can do hard things. We can overcome obstacles with grit and gratitude.

Reflective questions:

What is at the top of your mountain? Even if you cannot see it clearly, what do you imagine it could be? Use your imagination, dare to dream.

What step could you take to begin your path toward it?
