Empowering Your Natural Rhythm through Small Daily Commitments to Yourself

Empowering Your Natural Rhythm through Small Daily Commitments to Yourself

As a society, we create the social patterns and structures which we live within. We often unconsciously adopt the traditions and behaviours of our parents, family, and social circles, often only realising their influence later in life.

The pressure of conforming to what a successful life looks like through the lens of our immediate influencers is already formidable; as Vish Chatterji said earlier this month “recognising the growing external pressure to conform and how much we measure success based on external factors; the lesson is to tune inwards as much as we can.”

So what does ‘tuning in’ mean? When we talk about anchoring our identity to our work, or our family or partner; how does that show up and what do we do about it?

There is a reason why we either consciously or subconsciously allow ourselves to go through the motions of life without getting to know ourselves on a deeper level. We all have our ‘stuff’ and it can be uncomfortable to think about it, to feel it, to see it. The thought of unpacking it even a little bit can feel awkward. It is much easier to look away and distract ourselves with a busy day.

Have you ever had a feeling in your gut that something was right or wrong, but you didn’t know how to explain it?

That is the first point of connection we have with our inner knowing, it is the access point for tuning in. Imagine you've found the volume button on your radio; at first, it can be a bit fuzzy, and you can’t quite understand what is being said, but as you learn to tune in and turn it up, you begin to hear it much more clearly.

Once we’ve found our frequency, we can start listening. Our inner knowing is our unique guide to everything we do and the ultimate way we connect with our natural instincts.

"Many of the best things in life grow along the way.

  • Start hanging out with someone and love grows along the way.

  • Start exercising and motivation grows along the way.

  • Start writing and inspiration grows along the way.

Start now and let the feeling follow." (James Clear)

If we can begin to create even a snippet of space each day to tune in to ourselves, through meditation, walking in the park, pausing and listening to birdsong or music; we begin to trust our knowing and can tap into it, using it to guide our actions and next steps. The space you create can be anything, anything that draws your attention inward, play with it, be curious.

Breaking years of habit and living in a certain way is not easy, there is no quick fix. Even if there was, would you take it?

“The brain adapts or expands in response to repeated patterns of activity so that in a real sense the brain we develop reflects the life we lead.” (Sharon Begley; The Plastic Mind)

The journey to self-discovery is made even more magical with the twists and turns that we encounter along the way, it is more potent because it is our own distinctive path.

If we can start with one small step, one small daily commitment to understanding the unique self more each day, the more we will trust it. The more we trust it, the more empowered we become to discover and be inspired by our most authentic wild self within.
