Natural Instincts: Embracing Adaptability

In the pursuit of success and personal growth, we often find ourselves tethered to the idea of consistency. We set strict routines, aiming to tick off tasks like clockwork, convinced that this is the pathway to achievement. But what happens when our relentless pursuit of consistency leads us astray?

Many of the insights shared by James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, seem to strike a chord. One particular idea he shared a few weeks ago has stuck with me:

"In theory, consistency is about being disciplined, determined, and unwavering.

In practice, consistency is about being adaptable. Don't have much time? Scale it down. Don't have much energy? Do the easy version. Find different ways to show up depending on the circumstances. Let your habits change shape to meet the demands of the day.

Adaptability is the way of consistency."

Like many, I measured my success by how consistent I was in various aspects of my life – from getting to the gym each morning to sticking to a rigid work routine. Yet, as I stepped back and assessed my life, I realised my commitment to consistency had come at a cost.

Amongst my focus on achievement, I had confined myself to a narrow definition of success, one that prioritised productivity over personal fulfilment.

As James Clear says, consistency in theory is a great way to create habits. Research has shown how impactful it can be as a catalyst for positive change when you consistently do something.

Yet, as we explore the shifts we want to make in our lives; we need to be able to adapt and release the systems we once had, as they may not be fit for purpose for life we want to create.

This requires trust – trust in ourselves, our capabilities, and our capacity to adapt. To be able to connect with our natural instincts and create space for our dreams, ideas, and desires to come alive, trusting they live within us.

As we cultivate a deeper understanding of ourselves, we empower ourselves to live authentically. We gain the courage to pursue our dreams and share our unique gifts with the world.

In this journey of self-discovery and growth, adaptability becomes the true measure of consistency – a steadfast commitment to embracing change and evolving into the best version of ourselves.

Could you take a moment to look at your day ahead, is there anything you can adapt to to shape your needs today?

Could you allow the rhythm of life to find you?
