Shift into the New Year at Your Own Pace

Roots and Rainbows

A plethora of emails had piled into my inbox, beginning December 31st. I had tried to resist the urge to look but the pervasive nature of my need to “check-in” took control.

As I saw offer after offer, planning, and goal-setting tips & tools galore; my heart began to sink and my mind seized the opportunity to offer all the negative stories it could conjure up.

You are so behind, look at what everyone else is doing;” “You don’t have a plan, you haven’t set your goals;” “You haven’t started X, Y, Z…”

I battled with this narrative throughout the day. Six months ago, I believe I would have allowed myself to entertain the narrative for much longer.

The mind is usually reacting to an external stimulus, outside of our control, rushing us into the future to avoid the discomfort of the present. I have learned when the mind is most frantic, pushing us towards action based on fear; it is more important than ever to slow down.

I decided to go for a long walk, breathing in the soothing sounds of nature and rooting firmly into the present moment. I watched as some birds flew at speed, skimming over the water; others gracefully took their time as they paddled gently. Each mapping out their journey, moving towards their own, unique destination; trusting they would arrive when they were meant to.

I’m learning to trust the timing of the journey.

To tune into the balance between rooting, grounding, and building the foundation of what is to come; alongside the allure of the bright, shiny prospects of possibility, the shimmer of a rainbow in the sky. Focusing less on a big goal or resolution, and more on the small shifts each day that enable presence, growth, and gratitude.

It is natural to feel pressured at this time of year to have everything all sorted out. Permit yourself to slow down, go within, and allow your heart to rise and guide you; trust you are exactly where you are meant to be.

What small daily shifts do you want to bring in? What will keep you grounded each day? What inspires you and ignites your passions?
